Solve : Can I Take Out CPU & Heatsink as one unit?? |
|
Answer» I am getting ready to swap out my bad board. Can I take the heatsink and cpu out without detatching them and put it on the new board? The heatsink attaches to the MOTHERBOARD. The cpu attaches to the socket. How would you propose to remove them as one unit?I believe he means the CPU heatsink which resides on top of the CPU...not the MBoard... I am getting ready to swap out my bad board. Can I take the heatsink and cpu out without detaching them and put it on the new board? As Patio says, you can. However, with newer computers, usually the heatsink is physically larger than the thermal spreader of the CPU, and usually the heatsink will come off when you lift it, without the CPU. Thing is, if the paste has congealed to the point where it does stick, it MIGHT need to be replaced anyway (for best results). Thanks to all. Since this is my first with a MB I was trying to make things as easy and uncomplicated as possible. It looked as if I unclipped the cpu it would come off when I lifted the heatsink and I could put it on the new board. However, on second thought, I figured this was not a good idea because I would not be able to see if I was getting it lined up on the new board. I sure don't want to bend or break anything. Most modern CPU's have a small angle cut in one corner to properly line it up SLOT wise... Just be patient and take your time and you should do fine... I strongly suggest re-doing the thermal paste... Thermal Paste Guide... Also many people find it easier to install the CPU/Heatsink/Fan combo with the MBoard out of the case...Unless there is a fan hidden under the heatsink, the fan on this PC is mounted on the frame. You've given zero info on this PC ...and i can't see it from here...Sorry about that. Most of that info was on my first post about swapping out the MB without Win7 disks. It's an HP e9180t running on Win7 64 bit. After taking out the heatsink I can see the fan inside. I used the compressed air on it but it still looks dusty to me.Apparently the MBoard is a Pegatron...which is impossible to find very much info on... Post a few pics if you can.Do you mean pics of the MB? It is a Pegatron, same layout as the Truckee IPMTB-TK Motherboard SpecificationsThanx for the legwork CC... So is there no heatsink/fan assembly that sits on the CPU jogee ? ?The fan is inside the heatsink. None of the board layouts that I have seen show this. Quote from: jogee on April 30, 2012, 12:25:14 PM The fan is inside the heatsink. None of the board layouts that I have seen show this. Yes, generally the fan and heat sink are one component. These have nothing to do with the layout of the board. You will not be able to remove them as one PIECE. The lever and cover that releases the CPU cannot be lifted up without first removing the fan/heat sink. Even if it could, I would strongly advise against attempting to do so. Remove the heat sink, clean it well, remove the processor and clean it as well, then reapply thermal paste when you put it together with the new motherboard. Follow Patio's link for instructions on how to apply the thermal paste.
