You should install the software for the printer before it is connected to the computer. When you connect a USB device to a computer running a Windows operating system; it will automatically search for, load, and configure the best driver it can find for the device. If it thinks it found a compatible driver, that's the one it will attempt to use forever (until you either remove it or search for an update). I'm guessing the Windows 98 operating system did not come with a suitable driver for the Canon LBP2900, so you need to install the correct software either from the installation CD that came with the printer or latest download from a Canon website. This European SITE provides downloads in several different languages of the World: Laser Shot LBP2900.
Suggested installation steps for Windows 98: o Ensure Canon LBP2900 printer disconnected from computer and removed from operating system (Remove from within Device Manager, then reboot Windows 98). o Install the software for the printer. o Reboot Windows 98. o Connect one end of USB CABLE to printer. o Connect POWER source to printer, power on printer. o Connect other end of USB cable to computer. o Windows should detect NEW USB hardware (printer), search for, find, load and configure the printer device driver software. o You should now be able to access printer from within Windows 98.
