Solve : Can't use anything 3D with GPU?

Answer»

Just last week I installed the latest drivers for my NVIDIA 9800GT card running in WIN XP. I have not had any problems until recently. As of yesterday, I can no longer do anything that requires 3D (games, screensavers). I can browse the internet or any general things without a hitch. As soon as I start a game or one of the 3D screensavers I have, the computer almost instantly freezes. The image on the screen does change every 10 seconds or so, but is incomplete. After about 30 seconds I get a BSOD, saying something about an infinite loop and THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER. I have tried removing the drivers, and installing the previous ones with no success. I've even looked up about cleaning display drivers before installing new ones with no luck. There is no problem at all when using the GPU with WIN 7 that I have had installed on another partition for 2 months. It's only with XP all of a sudden. I'm really confused as to why this has stopped working just now with only XP and not 7. Any help WOULD greatly be appreciated. It's most likely you have installed the wrong driver...

(Click to consult the online Win XP Resource Kit article.)
A device driver problem has caused the system to pause indefinitely (hang). Typically, this is caused by a display driver waiting for the video hardware to enter an idle state. This might indicate a hardware problem with the video adapter, or a faulty video driver.

Revert back to the driver that shipped with the card...NEWER is not always better.I am unable to use the installation disc that came in the box as it is not detected by my drive. It says that there is no medium present. I don't see why this would be a problem with a particular version of the drivers. Before upgrading to 195.62 I had been using 191.07 for sometime with no problem. To me, it seems like there is something wrong with the installation of the drivers.I'm not SURE what you mean that the installation disc is not detected,,,We'll the drive I have is one of those TSST ones you get with OEM machines. It has a lot of problems reading certain types of discs. Just the other day, I purchased an external DVD burner to supplement it. The only problem is that it hasn't arrived just yet.Not sure if this is related, but I got another BSOD when using the System Information for Windows tool to see if I could find anything. The error I received was: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED caused by KMWDFILTER.sys.Earlier I said that I had no problem with the GPU when using it with Win 7, well after playing a game for a little longer on the system, I get a similar problem to what I have with XP. I don't get any BSOD's, but I do get an error message saying "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." After looking in the event viewer, I also saw this message: "The NVIDIA Display Driver Service service has reported an invalid current state 32." The past few hours my PSU's FAN has started to make a grinding noise. I haven't had the PSU for even a year yet. Could this be related?Borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there overnite...
This will let you know.I haven't located one yet, but what if the problem is still occurring after swapping PSU's? Isn't it possible that the motherboard could be the problem, or both? I ask this because the day before all this started, the weather was pretty bad with snow, wind, etc and the power fluctuated several times causing the PC to shut off once. I've read that brownouts and spikes can be damaging to a PSU, but what about the rest of the system?Quote from: lordvader781 on January 11, 2010, 06:55:57 PM

If the PSU was of good quality, it should have WITHDRAWN the POWER_GOOD signal before the power level dropped or went up to a level that was unsafe for the inside components, meaning that the rest of the PC should be undamaged.

Have you tried rolling back to 191.07?

From what I can tell, this is part of a mouse driver. This is interesting because the mouse driver and the video driver do communicate a tad for information relating to the cursor. You could try removing any mouse software you have installed and see if using the default HID driver for the mouse appears to solve the issue entirely, as well.Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 11, 2010, 07:06:03 PM

It's actually a driver for a USB keyboard that I got for Christmas. Would this really be a problem? I've been using the keyboard for over 3 weeks with no problem even when playing games. I didn't start having a problem until last Thursday night, the day after the brownouts occurred.hmm, well you could be right about the motherboard, but you can't be certain until you try a known good PSU.Out of curiosity, I switched back to the on-board graphics and installed the correct drivers for it. I've yet to have any problems doing anything 3D. Of course I've had to turn the settings down, but at least for the moment I can do something with 3D. Using the card, I was unable to do anything in 3D. I'd assume this doesn't really prove anything since there is no longer a large amount of power being drawn from the power supply as the card is not in use. In terms of locating a new PSU, I think I'll just have to buy one myself as I don't know anyone that has a spare. Before I spend the money on a new one, would it be of any use to buy power supply tester? I've read mixed results about these things.
