Solve : Cannot Play DVD on Computer?

Answer»

I hope I have chosen the correct forum. I copied a VHS tape to DVD on my recorder. It will play on my laptop running XP but will not play on my desktop using XPPro. The DVD on the desktop will play other DVDS I have but not the one recorded on my new Samsung DVD recorder. In explorer I can find the folder indicating that the recorded file is there but it will not open. I am new to this group. Hope someone can help. Thanks. bmck [emailprotected]Please, remove your email address from your post, as soon, as possible.Which program are you running on the desktop to play it ? ?
You could DLoad and try VLC media player...it's free.I am using InterVideo DVD which will play DVDs on my laptop but not my desktop. I have downloaded VLC as you suggested and will try it. Thank you. BMCKI downloaded VLC media player and installed it on my desktop. The DVD I recorded will still only play on my laptop, not on the desktop. I should mention I can play other DVDs on the desktop but not the one just recorded. BMCKbmck, Just on the off chance this might help. But 1st have you EVER created a DVD on your VHS/DVD player/recorder that DID work on your desktop? Now something to concider. Do you have the OPTION on the recorder to select a region code IE. Pal ,Ntsc,ETC? Have you selected NTSC? Apparently some COMPUTERS (both laptops and desktops) will play either when inserted but OTHERS won't. This could explain why your laptop does and your desktop doesn't. Does your DVD player on your desktop handle both DVD+ and DVD- ? Does the created disk (the one your having the problem with) also play in a stand alone DVD player? Good luck, truenorthThe DVDs that will play on my desktop were recorded on another recorder which is now not usable. My
present recorder is a Samsung VR350 that uses DVD - media (same used in the previous recorder). I cannot seem to find an option where I can select a region code although surely there must be one. Many thanks for the responses. BMCKQuote

I understand, that I'm not offering any help, but the above sometimes happens. Some optical drives are picky.bmck,So if i understand correctly from your reply above: on your current VHS/DVD player/recorder you have NOT yet produced a DVD disk that WILL play on the desktop computer that was used to play disks previously created on your previous VHS/DVD player/recorder. You seem to have eliminated the possibility of a DVD+ DVD- cause as you are using the same disks that DID work with your other player/recorder. My belief is that the problem you are having is less likely to be with your computer and more likely with the player/burner that you are now using. You did not answer as to whether the disks you are now creating will play on a stand alone DVD player. By the way my assumption is that you are in the NTSC (north American VIDEO region). My responces are based on that belief.I use a "GO Video VHS/DVD player recorder and also a more recent "Lite-on unit. There are parameters that need to be set within the software of both units such as region code, record mode (expressed in hours of video permitted to be recorded to a given DVD disk) etc. Both my units caution on the com patability of certain DVD manufactures (and i have found that to be a problem). Although if you are able to play the generated disks on your laptop i cannot see that being a problem. I still lean toward the region code issue as at the moment that is the only one that seems to fit. As an additional attempt to narrow this down as well as trying a disk on a stand alone player try to play one on another desktop and let us know the results.Unless there are other ideas from other forum members this one is a puzzlement. Have you tried to contact Samsung tech support to seek their opinion? good luck, truenorthThank you again for the follow up comments. I have not had a chance to try a disc in a stand alone DVD player but will do so. Also have not contacted Samsung yet but that is a good suggestion. BMCKIf all else fails you can try here...

Great site to help with this kind of trouble. I would look up your make and model burner and see whats been tested with it. Sometimes just changing the media may help.

I tried playing a DVD that was recorded on my Samsung VR350 on a stand alone DVD player and like my desktop computer, it would not play or read the disk. I will now try the video help site that was posted in this forum and also contact Samsung. Thank you. BMCKProblem solved. I neglected to mention I had recorded on Memorex DVD-RW media. I tried using TDK DVD-R and now can play the recorded DVDs on any player, computer or stand alone. Many thanks for the replies. bmckThank you for posting back
