My wife has the above printer. It is a 3 function UNIT print,copy,scan. It has been well documented that this particular printer is a real ink hog. Does ANYONE know (hopefully because they own one) of a method that enables the continued use of the scanner and/or copier when the ink cartridges are indicating ink empty? She has another ink jet printer that she prefers instead of the Canon for printing and would only like to have continued access to the scanner.copier functions. All references to both the paper manual and the embedded software help do not provide any indication of how to do this or even if it can be done. Just an update on this ISSUE. It has become Canon's official response that on this model (printer/copier/scanner) if for ANY reason the printer does not function then the other two components WILL NOT work and nothing can be overridden or altered to get them to work. THUS in reality it is only a 3 function machine if the printer works. truenorth
