Answer» Hi i have an external HD which can be seen by my windows XP but when i try to open it i get a message NEEDS FORMATTING.The disk is almost full and i want to try and save these files.I tried a"save files" program called PC inspector,it failed,,i also tried a linux utility Knoppix,it cant SEE the disk at all.Any ideas?Was this drive and the data that is on it always associated with the computer that has the O/S XP installed or has it been brought from another computer with another operating system? But as Patio has pointed out that may be your consequence anyway. You do not MENTION that you have tried this yet so before formatting to be able to use the drive try connecting it to as many other computers as you have ACCESS to (probably up to 3-4 would ensure if it were even possible to retrieve the data). no,it was on the same PC ,no changes,just stopped working ,i think i must forget those files
