Solve : CD drive and DVD drive gone??? virus???? |

Answer» 1st of all Im not very computer savy... but Ill do my best... I am using a compaq presario with amd sempron 3100+ xp-sp2. ok now thats out of the way. My cd rom and dvd and all of my usb ports vanished over the past couple of weeks my system kept saying DEVICE unplugged(and make sound) then the device sounded like it was replugged in? I went copy a cd and there is no drive. I checked the device manager and nothing in there??? 2nd I did recover the usb ports by following the advice of "Patio" in one of the forums (Thanks for the info) I am currently running "Stopsign" virus protector which I just installed. I called my DSL company and they checked their end and everything is great all the way to my puter then I get nothing. the error message reads " limited or no connectivity" speed 100.0mbps sent/received packets "0" I tried to use windows to fix problem but it can not do this. it says to contact the person that manages my network? also in the notes it states " this problem occured because the network did not assign a network address to the computer???" any other suggestions would be great!!Now I did a system restore and have my internet back, but still dont have any drives...as in cd/rw dvd or my usb ports... I thought my usb ports were ok but they are not!! This is getting very old very fast!!! Have you ran the 'Guided help' program? Scroll down the webpage at the link below. You will find a 123kb program called Download Guided Help.Download and run it. Let us know what happens. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/I would try a brand new 80 pconductor IDE cable and install one optical drive at a time and see if they are recognised...are they showing up in the BIOS ? ? If not that IDE channel may have gotten fried. It's still worth it to test with a new cable however... GOOD Luck. I want to Thank EVERYONE who gave suggestions to me... The final results are... I replaced the cables and reinstalled both cd-rw and dvd... also removed all of my usb ports and reinstalled!!! Everything works awsome The only question is why would this happen if I never went into the computer before. never touched the wires inside. could a virus do this to a computer?
