Answer» I have tried to use the Winxp installation disk that came with my Compaq computer. The computer is about 3 years old. It has a DVD player and a CDRw. The drives seem to work sporatically. Sometimes they will FIRE up and read great. Other times they, mostly the cdrw, will fail to start, not see the disk in the drive or start then stop loading the program. Any ideas? Anyone know of a free program to check the CDrw or Dvd?not sure of a program, but I would check google. Three ideas, 1. Lense damaged. (new drive needed) 2. Lens dirts. (You can get a CLEANING disk at any OFFICE supply store) 3. The internal triger that activated the lense when the drive is closed is some how damaged. (New drive) P.S. A CD burner/ DVD reader is cheap theses days. I have a store were I can get a no NAME brand for $15, it may just be worth it to you to buy a new one.
