I was given a computer which has a cd drive but is not recognized.  How do I get it to work?  Thanks.When you say it isn't recognised, do you mean in the BIOS or do you mean that no CDs are recognised in Windows when you INSERT them?  Is the CD recognised during the boot procedure (is it listed along with the hard drive(s)?) If not, check in the BIOS that all your drives are set to auto-detect. If still no joy you need to check the physical connections to the back of the drive & again, if no joy, swap it out just to test.  If it's in Windows you're having the problem, check in Device Manager that the CDROM is listed & 'working ok'.Test it on another computer to see if it functions properly.Thanks much for he replies.  

When I co into My Computer to see the drives, it does not show the cd drive so I assumed that it did not recognize the cd drive.  Thanks.  Would reinstalling Windows helps or is there another means to repair this?  I appreciate your EFFORT so much.
