Solve : CD-ROM drive no longer works?

Answer»

Having a problem with CD-ROM drive. Acer 50X max. Start computer-cd-rom lite stays on, and drive is not recognized. From older (Win98) computer, as I have XP Pro now. Use this computer as backup machine and experimenting with programs ETC. Good no-name computer otherwise. Any ideas what went or could be wrong? Thanx. JoatmonIf it's over a year old, it could well be dead. Was it working fine and then now nothing at all? Any playing about with the cables or messing in the BIOS?

Is the CDROM seen in the BIOS? If so delete it from Control Panel/System and reboot. If nothing, then check the cables for snugness. If that doesn't get it, then you are in the market for a new drive. It is one of the most annoying facts of computers the the CD/DVD drives are active all the time and therefore burn out over time even if you think it is not being USED it will burn out. If only there was something like the settings in USB where the drive if unused would automatically switch off.
The drive if over two years old probably has burnt out the laser head and it is not COST effective to replace , its CHEAPER to buy a new DVDQuote

This is inaccurate at best...
