Solve : CD ROM drive not working when connected?

Whilst building a computer for the first time I have encountered a problem. The CD-ROM drive that i have connected does not work. The device itself POWERS up but only once i have disconnected the IDE CABLE. After plugging the IDE cable back in, the drive no LONGER works again.

I have tried a vast amount of different cables and drives but i encounter the same problem each time. I have even tried using two different power supply units. The floppy drive and hard disk that i have INSTALLED both appear to be working ok though.

"cables and drives" What were these other drives that you REFER to? Connected to the same ide and power supply cable? truenorth
