Solve : CD-RW and DVD drives missing?

Answer»

Tried to find help in previous forums but all of the tech help looked specific to each person/computer....  So here is my issue:

Neither my CD-RW or DVD ROM will work or even show up in My Computer.  I have no idea when it happened or what caused it.  They are still listed in the devise manager but with little yellow exclamation marks.  Tried to use windows to get NEW drivers but it always says there is no better match.  Also tried to uninstall and reinstall but that didn't work either.

Thx in advance if you can help.

Running XP Home Version 2002 Service Pack 3.  No idea about the cd/dvd drive INFORMATION...they came in the computer:  HP Pavilion a1000n Do yhe drives show up in BIOS?where do i see that?Try one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on downloaded file, and allow registry merge.
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign NEXT to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.I Am having the same issue but in windows vista.  I can see the device but with the exclamation point and error code 10.  I have uninstalled and it reinstalls on restart, but still error 10. I have updated and searched but it always says I have the newest version.  Anybody?  If not, I have thought about bringing it to geek squad...any comments on that?  I have never had to bring in a computer before and don't know how to choose a good place.
Thanks.

Please start a new topic with your problem. Just to avoid confusion....here are my results:

Tried #2.  Downloaded it and opened it...then opened each file individually and ran both of them.... no luck there either.

Tried #1. But when it says:  In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters.
...this is not there to click on.

Tried #3.  uninstalled them..rebooted...windows tried to install them but it gave me that error 39 box.

...So I await the next idea...thx again

Just an FYI, I had the same problem, I needed to DELETE the Upper AND lower FILTERS.  Then restart the computer.  After I did that, all of a sudden it was there in the computer again.  I am running vista on an hp pavillion.  I know they are different operating systems, but maybe you need to remove both upper and lower also like I needed to.
Hope you get it fixed soon. Thx... Hopefully someone will be able to get me to the point where I actually have upper and lower filters to delete... Haha  Have you tried a new IDE cable yet ? ?
Or checked to see if the other one is snug ? ?
