Solve : CD-RW/DVD combo drive reads CD-ROMs but not CD-R's?

Answer»

My CD-RW/DVD combo drive reads CD-ROMs and DVDs, but stopped reading CD-Rs. I replaced the driver and cleaned the lens. No luck. The CD disc is good. Suggestions? This is in a Dell Inspiron 5100 with windows XP home Your drive could be going kaput. Or it could be the CD. You said that the CD-R is good...have you actually verified this by testing it on another computer? Have you tried a different brand of CD? Some drives (especially Phillips) can be very PICKY about which CD-R's they read. Have you tried burning at a slower speed? You should test all of these things out. If you still don't have any luck, you may need to replace the drive, which shouldn't cost much more than $20 or so.Thanks, I've tried to read different brands of CD-Rs without any luck. All can be read on different computers. I can't read any CD-Rs, EVEN ones I created and could read in the past. I think you might be right about needing a new combo drive. Any advice on what and where to buy?If you're in the US, Newegg has some of the best deals you can find and they're quite reliable. Most of us here have dealt with them plenty of times. I've also been able to find some good deals on Meritline; it's where I recently purchased my wife's new DVD drive, and I'm probably going to get my Digital TV converter box there as well. And I'm fairly certain they ship internationally. Of course, if you live outside the US, it would probably be best to use a SITE based in your country.Hey, thanks CBMatt. I think you've given me the "kick in the *censored*" I need to finally resolve this problem.Heh, I'm GLAD I can point you in the right direction. And THANKFULLY, new optical drives are fairly cheap these days.
