Solve : cd/rw failure?

Answer»

Help please.
win xp pro.
unknown make of cd/rw
makshita dvd/cd rom.

My problem is my cd/rw can't read cds.the page opens but it just says drive D but the rest is blank BUT if I leave a cd in the drive while booting up it can read it,opens and reads as normal. Is the problem with the unit, the driver or the software.
The driver installed is a default MS one. This driver also drives the dvd/cd rom.I sometimes get the impression that the driver is trying to drive both at once.

Please can anybody give me any advice?
Thankstry this:

autoplay wizzardTHANKS
Tried but failed.
initially the cd was read as it was in from boot up then it was not recognised during the test and now it will not eject either manually or by clicking "eject" but if I reboot it will probably read the cd and eject as normal.
does this help?
Thanks againare you getting this >http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q315350 and to find out what make of cdrom drive etc >http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/msinfo.mspxThanks
I'm not getting any error messages, just being ignored!
The cd /r just comes up a " standard" no manufacturer is shown.
If it works when a cd is in the tray at boot up does this mean a software error?  Would i have the same problem with a new cd/r.
There was a stage when the cd/r would not read the cd until I clicked "eject" then clicked to open, it would then run normally. But it won't do EVEN that now.
Thanks for your help, any more ideas?what software are you using ....not the cd/r disk is in question the drive?/software and what o/s helps us...Thanks
Win XP pro
cd/r  drive D
dvd player drive E
I don't KNOW what else to tell you.
I've noticed that when the drive closes it tries to open again, usually twice. Is this relevant?
the drive was in my previous PC which ran win 98 SE,it was fine for about 2 years then these problems started. Is there software in the drive itself? My previous PC overheated and I wonder if something has "melted" in the cd/r.But then again it works fine on re-boot.
Any more ideas please?does this help you>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q311455   and just to add to this cd/rom drive opening thing> run it http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/Sorry,still the same. The cd/r was failing on win 98 then the same on win XP on a new PC so I don't think the microsoft changing drive name applies.
Thanks again
