Solve : CDR & DVDr drives lost somewhere? |
|
Answer» My daughter has a Dell. Yesterday I went and installed a DVD writer on it. It had a DVD rom to begin with. After I installed and booted in the computer it showed only the dvd writer I had just installed..not the cd writer that was already in it. So I opened it up again and checked the jumper. Well on that system. instead of the belts saying master and slave..it says 1 and 2. Assuming 1 is the master and 2 is the slave I put the dvd as 2 and changed the jumper. When I went to boot it back up, it said no drive 4 and no drive 5 was found, press any key to continue. I did that and then got the error message sys32/config/system file is missing or CORRUPT, insert cd..you know...well..dell doesn't give you the install files...they say to use the help files on teh desktop which is pretty dumb if you can't get to the desktop. But anyway..since the computer was still under warranty (for 10 more days), she called them and they told her how to restore. Everything was lost. But when it came all back on...neither one of the drives are showing up. Not even in the BIOS...it says cd rom (not present) and no mention of the dvd writer. Any ideas??? Yeah, it's worth it. Even my seventy-something mom is using Firefox at the recommendation of her banker. Why not D/L it to a comp with broadband and burn it to disk ? Quote She has IE 6 and has cable connection. If you'd like to bookmark it for when you have time: http://www.mozilla.org/products/ (Thunderbird email is here too) and/or http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ Says Firefox is a bit under 6M. At 28.8 that would be about a half hour, I think. Thanks! I downloaded Firefox (it took me ALMOST an hour...I only connect at 21.9 kbps on a good day). It's great. I have been having pop ups telling me I have script problems with IE7 but it hasn't happened at all with Firefox. I really like it. Thanks so much for nudging me in the right direction with this browser! Peace, MollyExcellent ! Then there's all the cool extensions (add-ons) for Firefox. You might want to have a look at some of those. To open a page in IE while in Firefox, use an extension called IE Tab. For a cool Google homepage go to http://q4q.org/ and bookmark the GoogleX homepage. Now in the Tool Bar click on Tools > Options > at the Home Page field > Use Bookmark (or current page if GoogleX is still open) GoogleX uses the Genie Effect, float the cursor over an icon and you'll see. My favorite "Theme" is Winestripe 1.2.1 It's one of the originals and I just got used to it. There's a bunch to choose from. Tools > Add-Ons > Themes One more thing that comes to mind that I find useful is Firefox Preloader. It pre-loads parts of Firefox so when you launch, it opens faster. Search on "Favorite Firefox Extensions" for lots more good stuff. The current Firefox version is 2.0 Quote Excellent ! Linkification is great! Don't know what you use for email now, but keep Thunderbird in mind - for some day when you have time for another sizeable download. Like Firefox, it is free. |
