Solve : CDR & DVDr drives lost somewhere?

Answer»

My daughter has a Dell. Yesterday I went and installed a DVD writer on it. It had a DVD rom to begin with. After I installed and booted in the computer it showed only the dvd writer I had just installed..not the cd writer that was already in it. So I opened it up again and checked the jumper. Well on that system. instead of the belts saying master and slave..it says 1 and 2. Assuming 1 is the master and 2 is the slave I put the dvd as 2 and changed the jumper. When I went to boot it back up, it said no drive 4 and no drive 5 was found, press any key to continue. I did that and then got the error message sys32/config/system file is missing or CORRUPT, insert cd..you know...well..dell doesn't give you the install files...they say to use the help files on teh desktop which is pretty dumb if you can't get to the desktop. But anyway..since the computer was still under warranty (for 10 more days), she called them and they told her how to restore. Everything was lost. But when it came all back on...neither one of the drives are showing up. Not even in the BIOS...it says cd rom (not present) and no mention of the dvd writer. Any ideas???

It is still not jumpered correctly.

What model is this? "A Dell" is pretty vague. It's a Dell Dimension. I figured the jumpers were wrong, but I don't know how to figure out what goes where. The DVD-R says on the back which is what. The CDR does not. And as I said the cable is only listed as 1 and 2, which i've never seen before, usually labeled Master and Slave. But I did figure the 1 was the Master. But I don't know which one is which on the CDR. Is it pretty standard? Like C S M?

Her computer totally crashed after I did this. She restored totally, and now it's running real slow and it gets the BSD saying it is shutting down to avoid harm to the computer. I figure it is probably because of the jumper being wrong somewhere. She got the new system disks from Dell today...but WITHOUT a CD drive working she can't install to see if that fixes anything. I guess I'm just not a computer genius...

Thanks for any help you can give me!
Molly :-?What model DVD did you buy? There was no instruction sheet with it showing jumpers?I don't know what DVDr model it is. I took it out of my computer as I replaced mine with a LightScribe DVDr. I know where the jumpers go on it..it is marked. I'm not sure on the CD, it's blank but the jumper is on the far left side which on the DVD is marked as C. Are they pretty much standard? And am I correct in assuming that the cable marked "1" is the master and "2" is the slave?

Thanks,
MollyWell, that's all fixed now. I had to go into Bios and turn them on. They were jumpered right, just Bios was not set to recognize those drives at all. Only problem now...Internet Explorer keeps becoming non responsive. Isn't there a repair for IE somewhere?

THanks again,
MollyIt's called FireFox...

Seriously though what type of connection do you have and what ver. of IE are you trying to fix ? ?She has IE 6 and has cable connection.

Me..because my luck is pretty bad...I live 3 miles out too far for fast connection, and I have dial up as only option...not relevant..just thought I'd vent because I'm tired of slow connection.

I've been told about Firefox before...so it's worth the hours it will take me to download???

Yeah, it's worth it.
Even my seventy-something mom is using Firefox at the recommendation of her banker.
Why not D/L it to a comp with broadband and burn it to disk ?

If you'd like to bookmark it for when you have time:

and/or

Says Firefox is a bit under 6M. At 28.8 that would be about a half hour, I think.

Thanks! I downloaded Firefox (it took me ALMOST an hour...I only connect at 21.9 kbps on a good day). It's great. I have been having pop ups telling me I have script problems with IE7 but it hasn't happened at all with Firefox. I really like it. Thanks so much for nudging me in the right direction with this browser!

Peace,
MollyExcellent !
Then there's all the cool extensions (add-ons) for Firefox.
You might want to have a look at some of those.

To open a page in IE while in Firefox, use an extension called IE Tab.

For a cool Google homepage go to http://q4q.org/ and bookmark the GoogleX homepage.
Now in the Tool Bar click on Tools > Options > at the Home Page field > Use Bookmark (or current page if GoogleX is still open)
GoogleX uses the Genie Effect, float the cursor over an icon and you'll see.

My favorite "Theme" is Winestripe 1.2.1
It's one of the originals and I just got used to it. There's a bunch to choose from.
Tools > Add-Ons > Themes

One more thing that comes to mind that I find useful is Firefox Preloader. It pre-loads parts of Firefox so when you launch, it opens faster.

Search on "Favorite Firefox Extensions" for lots more good stuff.

The current Firefox version is 2.0

Glad you are liking it.

Don't know what you use for email now, but keep Thunderbird in mind - for some day when you have time for another sizeable download.
Like Firefox, it is free.
