Solve : Changing from one Pentium II to another.? |

Answer» Quote from: 69Z28 on May 14, 2010, 10:18:35 AM Here is the manual for the computer I have been talking about changing the P2 in. If I am reading correctly, and I am sure someone here will tell me DIFFERENT, I can make the change to the 450MHZ P2. I'll have to read over the manual again to comprehend it all, but that is my take on compatibility. Looks like it supports P-II processors up to 550Mhz (MAYBE faster, the diagram on page 3-4 labels some jumpers as "reserved for CPUs in the future". Ok. I did a quick read of the manual again and if I read this correctly based on what P2 is used the jumpers need to be set for that processor. Am I understanding that right? Am I understanding that right?Leave jumper in auto position for 100MHZ FSB. You can also control this in the BIOS, p.4-5 Bootup System Speed, toggles between 100 & 66. Since this one has the 440BX chipset and can be configured for either 66MHz or 100MHz. Look for a PII with FSB (Front Side Bus) of 100MHz. Multipliers are fixed, so 450MHz would be 4.5. The fastest PII is 450MHz, they never made a 550. They did make a PIII-400, that's where the overlap began. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_II Clockrate: 266 - 450 MHz * 66 MHz FSB : 266, 300, 333 MHz * 100 MHz FSB: 350, 400, 450 MHz It's possible that a PIII will function, too. They came in both 100MHz & 133MHz http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_III Katmai: 100 MHz FSB: 450, 500, 550, 600 MHz http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slotket I'm trying to find the link that shows all the possibilities. Here it is: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium-II/TYPE-Desktop%20Pentium%20II.html JP100 sets the bus speed. I suspect JP3 doesn't do anything, because bus multiplier is fixed inside the cpu. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Front-side_bus This might just work for you, it worked for him and for me: http://www.psychowire.com/mainboards/slocket.html http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium-III/Intel-Pentium%20III%20650%20-%20RB80526PY650256%20%28BX80526F650256%20-%20BX80526F650256E%29.html I used it for a while until I got a 2nd one, different manuf & a 700 instead of 650. I overclock my 700 to 933 by increasing the bus speed to 133 from 100. I got an oversize fan for it and it's been stable for over 5 years. My Asus supports overclocking, your mobo does not.Quote from: Computer_Commando on May 14, 2010, 04:31:50 PM Leave jumper in auto position for 100MHz FSB. I keep calling you Arnold to my wife because of your avatar...and I like to put a name to someone if I can't put a face. I'm a look in your eyes kind of person. I'm Gary, most of my friends call me "G". I first would like to thank you. It seems (so far, except for the a little confusion earlier) you have a knack for helping and I'm an infant when it comes to computer hardware. I've been fooling around off and on with them since 95. I don't want to say I'm a novice, but I am NOT sceert to pull one apart to see what makes it tick. There are so many old ones floating around and I get to use my brain other than a sive (sp). Your help has enlightened me as has on my other occasions. With that said, here is what I found. I was checking out EPAY and posted some link. I you don't want to look that's fine, but I appreciate your input. I'm not learning anything if you don't. G Quote from: Computer_Commando on May 14, 2010, 05:51:51 PM This might just work for you, it worked for him and for me: I read both LINKS. The psychowire looks like something I could do, but won't because I can't justify buying anything else in case other changes need to be made, and the second link, well lets just say I don't need to spend that much. Remember, I am economic stressed at the moment, but have prospects in the fire. Besides, my daughter says she'll buy a new one next year if I can't do anything with the one I'm currently trying to upgrade. G PM sentQuote from: Computer_Commando on May 14, 2010, 06:41:50 PM PM sent Let me know if you recv'd my PM. Quote from: 69Z28 on May 14, 2010, 07:13:06 PM Let me know if you recv'd my PM.Yes, both of them. Email sent.I've done that on old dells without any problems. I'd just try it. If what you have is 300mhz you don't have a lot to lose. I've probably tossed 30 0r 40 of those things in the last year. |
