Solve : Computer doesn't recognize CD/DVD reader/writer? |
|
Answer» I tried to save photo files to a CD several days ago on my HP computer using XP. The computer didn't recognize either of my two CD reader/writers. When I highlighted a photo file to save I was not given the option of "saving to a CD" as is normally the case. I PUT a blank CD in the drive and didn't get the window asking what I wanted to do. Basically the computer no longer recognizes the existence of the CD writer. If I put a software DISC into the CD driver, nothing happens then either. I replaced the CD/DVD writer with a new one and still nothing. There was no change. When I tried to BURN a music CD, I got a window saying I needed to plug in a CD writer. What's wrong, have any ideas?1) Be sure they are properly connected inside the case - power and data cables. Yes there are yellow exclamation marks. What does that mean? Follow the same path that led you to the yellow marks. Left-click the 'plus' sign by CD-ROM. Right-click on each of the drives in turn and 'uninstall.' Re-boot the computer - Windows should 'find' the CD devices and load the drivers automatically. Post back and LET us know how you made out.Drmsucks I went through the process you suggested and when I rebooted, I got a notice that the computer had "found" new the hardware, but apparently it didn't automatically download the drivers because the new writer still doesn't work. It won't, for example, recognize a CD of photos or a software CD I put in it for a test. What's next?Quote Go to to the Drive manufacturer's website and download the appropriate drivers.Windows 2000, and up doesn't need any extra drivers for optical drives. Try one of these: 1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 or... 2. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip or... 3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. You'll see two items: - ATA Channel0 (or PRIMARY Channel) - ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel) Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm. Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.Option 1 worked like a champ. Thank you very much. Thanks to everyone that took the time to help solve this problem. Thank you...thank you....thank you.Cool I might have spoken too soon. Now if I put say a CD with photos on it in the new drive, I have all the normal options (to copy content to a file etc), so that part works well. If I put an empty disc in, I don't get the normal "what do you want to do" as if it doesn't recognize an empty disc. More importantly, when I go to copy something to a CD in that drive, I now get an error that says, "D:\ is not accessible"..."incorrect function." Humm...still can't write files to the CD. Quote I don't get the normal "what do you want to do" as if it doesn't recognize an empty disc.Download, and run fix.bat: Click here Restart computer.I downloaded it, but nothing changed. Any other ideas? Is it a an absurd idea to re-install my XP OS software?Did you run it? |
