Solve : Computer Dummy Needs help..?

Answer»

Long story short : someone gave me a Gateway computer and I have a old Dell Computer.. I want to use the Gateway because it has ROOM for 3 memory sticks and more drivers, but it has little hard drive space, and I can't hook it up to internet.

Dell uses the little harddisk thingys and 1 cd drive one free usb port, little hard drive space. Oh and the Dell has XP (which I want) and ALOT of over cool programs I would like to keep. The Gateway has 98 which I can't use for anything!

So here are my questions I hope someone can answer:

I want more space, adding the memory card didn't seam to free up or add more space (like I said pc dummy), so can I take the hard drive from the dell (XP) and put in the Gatway (98) and in the end have more space and windows xp on the Gateway?
And if it is possiable to transfer the harddrive with the info, what other parts can I take from the Dell to make my Gateway a better PC?
Someone PLEASE help me!! One more thing, if you respond in computerze please TELL me what that means too..lolWelcome to the CH forums.

When XP was installed on your Dell pc the system was set up for the hardware configuration of the Dell, also Dell may have TAILORED the operating system to suit a Dell pc. If you now swap the hard drive to your Gateway the system is still set up for the Dell and you will get lots of conflicts in trying to run the OS. You could show this for your own satisfaction by swapping the Dell hdd to the Gateway and attempting to boot.

Do you have a genuine XP install disk which you could use to re-install XP if you decide to swap the hard drive to the Gateway?Thank you for your reply.

No I don't have the xp disk. Is there any way to transfer Xp to the Gatway with out having the disk? I guess they sell extra harddrives for both the dell and the Gateway? Not really. If you were to plug the dells hard drive into the other machine then it would just void Windows XP on the dells hard drive.

The memory stick you installed was this a RAM stick by any chance?

Oh and if you could tell us the model of the Dell it may help as well.
