Solve : Computer Freezing, relatively new, clean install?

Answer»

My System:

Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit)
Desktop, Self Built October 27, 2009
Mushkin Blackline Enhanced 1600 DDR3 RAM (4x2GB, 8GB Total)
ASUS M4A79T Deluxe Motherboard (AM3, onboard sound, realtek)
AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 ghz Quad-Core Processor
ATI Radeon 5870 1GB Video Card (PCI-E)
Logitech G9X Mouse (USB)
Saitek Cyborg Keyboard (USB)

My Problem:

The system quite often will freeze completely with 0 responsiveness. The only way to bypass this is to PRESS the restart button on my computer. This problem first happened two days after the computer was built and has been happening ever since. Sometimes it happens very, very often, and then I might go a few days to a week without any problems. I have only only frozen while playing a game once (and I do a lot of gaming). Most often this happens while I am just browsing the web, listening to music, or talking on VOIP programs. I have monitored the temperatures of my computer using Speed Fan and nothing is overheating.

I have tried the following with no success: updating the BIOS, sound DRIVERS, video card drivers, doing a clean install of Windows. Prior to reinstalling windows earlier, I had also tried defragmenting my drive and doing a virus scan. I have also ran the memory diagnostic tool and checked the hard drive for errors using Windows - no problems were detected.

Currently, I am running on a clean install of windows and the computer is still freezing up. The first time, it happened in the middle of installing one of the drivers for my motherboard, the second while I was installing Catalyst Control Center for my ATI video card, and third while I was eating dinner while there was simply a browser window open on the computer. The computer also may freeze up while shutting down (while just the Windows "Shutting Down" screen is up) and the same also happens when Windows is STARTING up.

What worries me the most about this being a hardware issue is that nothing had been completely installed on my computer yet (besides windows updates) when the first freeze occured after doing the clean install of Windows earlier today. To be specific, the first freeze (after reinstall) happened when I was just in the process of installing something, so a small number of files from Norton Security had been installed at the time of freeze up.

I do not know if this is any coincidence or not, but I was watching a live video stream two times in a row last night and both of those attempts at watching caused my computer to freeze. I froze up many other times that night, however, while not watching any videos. When I freeze up while listening to music, (I don't really know how to describe it) until I hit the reboot button there is a static-ish loud type of computer noise.

When building this computer, we put a lot of EFFORT into making sure everything was compatible. I am just really desperate to figure out this problem, so any help would be extremely appreciated. It is sounding to me like something is wrong with the motherboard, but I need some other opinions before I go out and buy another.

Thank you,

Samantha
Is that Mushkin RAM on the ASUS Preferred Vendoer List for that MBoard ? ?
This is normally not an issue but it becomes 1 when running DDR3 RAM...Hi,

Thanks for the response!

The RAM I got is indeed on the Preferred Vendor list for the motherboard.

Samantha

Update:

I would also like to add that I ran the windows memory test again last night and 0 errors came up, and that I also ran the hard drive diagnostic SOFTWARE which I obtained from my hard drive manufacturer's website (Seagate). No issues with that either.Saitek although a high end product has had issues in the past...
Try for a few days with a different keyboard and see if that helps...
Granted i'm grasping at straws right now cause that's a pretty healthy build and you shouldn't be having issues...

One other thing...actually 2...you didn't mention what PSU is in this and are you sure you have 64bit Drivers for all devices ? ?
