Solve : Computer locks up/turns itself on after being shut off?

Answer»

Hi,
I have an IBM Aptiva Desktop running Windows XP (newest service pack) with a Pentium 4 2.8GHz processor and 756MB of RAM.  AVG Free anti-virus software with SpyBot and Ad-Aware for spyware.

My problem is that when I had the computer at school it would turn itself on about an hour or two after I shut it down, so I would just leave it unplugged to prevent that from happening.  Now that I've brought it back home (at home the computer is not connected to the internet) I'm having problems turning it on.  It'll START the boot sequence then stop, so I'll reset it by holding down the power button.  Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 resets to get it to stay on (during these times I get an option to boot in safe mode and some error message: ERROR 0162 Configuration error, that either prompts me to continue boot up or enter setup using the F keys).  Once it's on it'll freeze up on me with in ten minutes, unless I just put on some MUSIC and leave it alone then it'll run longer.  I've never had this problem while I was back at school but as soon as I brought it home this has been happening.  How can I fix the problem?

Also I've ran AVG free scan on it (before it can freeze up although the scan doesn't finish) and it notes that three files have been changed, they are: user32.dll , shell32.dll and ntoskrnl.exeAnyone? The changed files AVG is reporting is not necessarily an issue.

The exact error message and some more details could be helpful. What was different between school and here? Have you played about in the BIOS? Other issues with the machine?I haven't messed around with BIOS.  The message says:
ERROR
0162 Configuration Error

The only difference between here and school is that the computer has no internet access at home.

I opened it up to see if anything isn't damaged inside, and after I hooked it back up it won't even start.  It gets power (light goes one) but the screen stays dark and the computer doesn't initiate the boot sequence.

I know this is separate from the problem at hand but what could have caused the computer to turn itself back on while I was at school. Are you FAMILIAR with the CMOS battery? It may well be holding some power but, weak. Quote from: street1 on May 20, 2007, 05:47:28 PM

No, I'm not... but go on.Read the below site.Cost is about 3-7 US dollars.

http://www.liverepair.com/encyclopedia/articles/cmosreplace.aspI got it to start today and it just doesn't keep track of the correct date, it was a day behind in time.  Could I attribute this to another problem or is it still a CMOS battery problem. That's usually an indication the CMOS battery is weak or dead.
Remember when working inside the case to remove all power SOURCES and take anti static precautions...

Nice pic Patio

Thanks for all the help, I'll try that. The new CMOS Battery should solve your problem.
