Solve : Computer Resources? |

Answer» I wasn't exactly sure whether I should post this under Software, Games, or Hardware, but I did a few searches and glanced through the FAQs on various sites and forums, but couldn't find other information. I've allocated more RAM off my limited hard drive space already I don't understand what that means as these are two completely different things. Did you install all of the correct drivers from the resource CD or the Dell site?Virtual memory... you can allocate hard drive space to serve as memory, I guess. I was informed to do this from a friend. I have a little more than 4gb of space, which I could improve if I chose to, but previously I had 2-3 and my system worked perfectly fine (prior to the reformat). The hard drive only allows 27.9gb of useable space, which is QUICKLY filled up with programs and games. I had lost my Dell CDs when I chose to reformat, and since my computer was no longer under warrenty, they only sent me the Windows XP CD, so my drivers I installed I found on the internet off of the manufacurers sites and such. Any other ideas? EDIT: The defragging of the hard drive had little to no effect whatsoever on the problems...Quote Virtual memory... you can allocate hard drive space to serve as memory, I guess. I was informed to do this from a friend. No need to do this at all. Just take the Windows default settings. You got some bad advice there. Quote I have a little more than 4gb of space, which I could improve if I chose to, but previously I had 2-3 and my system worked perfectly fine (prior to the reformat). Quote I had lost my Dell CDs when I chose to reformat, and since my computer was no longer under warrenty, they only sent me the Windows XP CD, so my drivers I installed I found on the internet off of the manufacurers sites and such. Drivers for a Dell machine should ONLY be obtained from the Dell site. No exeptions to this for best results. What did you use from elsewhere, and where was it? All of them were from the Dell site, aside from the one I got from SiS's site -- the manufacturer. I just checked, downloaded it, and compared the name and size to the other file, and it was precisely the same. So all the drivers should be fine, as the rest came from Dell's site. I freed up some more space on the hard drive, same problem... and took away the Virtual Memory I allocated from the hard drive... same problem. I also tried running a downloadable flash game called "N", and it ALSO lags intensely after MERELY a few minutes of play, hogging all my system resources (goes up to 99% on CPU and like 24,000+ on memory), and it does the same in safe mode... Edit: I just realized I didn't mention I downloaded them off of Dell's site. But I only installed like around 4 drivers, since I didn't update the ones for the modem or printer, and there were only around four others.Process Explorer is one way of seeing how your resources are being used. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processexplorer.mspx Good help files come with it. What are you using for virus and spyware protection? There are other issues afoot here.I had said earlier that I was using McAfee and AVG for virus software (as well as an online one, which I just searched and did again, called TrendMicro), and I use SpyBot and Ad-Aware for spyware/malware, and CleanUp to remove temp files and all that stuff. I removed McAfee like I was informed to (AVG was my preference but the college I attend put McAfee on all of our computers). I also just downloaded the Process Explorer program, I'll play around with that and see if I can target a specific process that is to blame, but I somehow doubt it. I also have HijackThis or whatever it's called, which I could post the results from or something. Edit: I scanned my computer with all of these programs previously, and fixed the only issues it found: a few vulnerabilities and a tracking cookie. Nothing else was found on any of them, aside from the removal of temp files by CleanUp... that's THREE antivirus programs and two spyware/malware programs, plus a CleanUp tool... so unless I'm missing something, the problem isn't a virus or any form of spyware or malware. And my updated drivers prove (I think) that it's not a hardware problem. And my system runs perfectly fine except when I load up any games, flash files, or streaming video it seems... though Firefox and Gaim, as mentioned before, also end up hogging resources over time. Any other ideas? I also don't want to come off as rude or unappreciative, I'm just frustrated, and I do appreciate all the help and advice thus far. |
