Solve : computer starts but does nothing?

Answer»

I am not a technically minded computer user, so I don't know it there is anything that I will be able to do. As my user name impies I am a CONTRACTOR. At this very moment I am pulling out my 18v cordless dewalt to get into my laptop. lol Quite the picture.

Anyway my problem is that when I turn my computer on I hear noise as it starts (the cpu unit? fan?). It turns on to my first screen that says compaq in the middle of the screen. The bottom says f10= ROM Based Setup and F12=Boot From Lan. Then nothing. The screen stays there with the same display and no noise.

I really hate to buy a new computer, but that is looking like my only option, so any help would be greatly appreciated, but remember I don't know anything technical here.

My computer is a COMPAQ Presario 3000, about 5 years OLD. It has been handled pretty rough including being dropped a few times, which I am SURE has not helped.

Pentium 4
512 ram
2.8 ghz
80 gb

Not sure if I worded everything right. anyway thanks for taking the time.I am thinking maybe my hdd is fried?Quote

I am thinking maybe my hdd is fried?

That could be the problem, nevertheless what kind of noise does your PC make? Is it a short beep, a long beep, three beeps one after the other? Or is it just a noise that sounds like a cooler stop? If the latest applies then it might mean that one of your coolers may not work and the PC stops for its own good.

If your HDD is fried than the noise should be like when the HDD is running, then a louder noise and then it stops.

Please describe the noise in DETAIL...if that is posible. Why don't you unhook everything except the CPU/Fan, 1 stick of RAM, video, keyboard and mouse and try to boot. What happens now?

What HAPPENED right before it quit working?
