Solve : Computer Turns On By Itself ???

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I just built my girlfriend a new desktop system, and she is having a problem with it turning on by itself.

Now, I know of one problem to look for is the "Wake On LAN" in the bios.

But if this is not the problem, what else can I look for? Has anyone had this problem with the cause coming from something other than the bios?

She lives far from me and wanted to go prepared to look for other causes to her problem without having to make multiple trips to her house.

Thanks for your help.

System Info:
Mobo MSI 945GCM478-L
P4 2.8 Ghz (i believe it is a northwood)
Crucial 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)
WD Caviar Blue WD800JD 80GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard DRIVE
EVGA 256-P2-N751-TR GeForce 8600 GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express
SILVERSTONE ST400 400W ATX 12V 2.2 Power Supply (I also used a 20 pin to 24 pin adapter to mobo)
Koutech IO-RCM620 USB 2.0 3.5"/5.25" Card Reader
SYBA IEEE 1394a FireWire PCI Card
Win XP sp3 oem

Thanks !!Also, I also installed a WIRELESS pci adapter from Netgear WG311
One thing to check is the wake on mouse/KB option, i.e when the mouse moves it starts.

I also have an option on my board to start at any given time pre-set in the bios.

is the power point/connection secure?
There is an option in the BIOS that states when power is lost, when the power comes back, whether to boot or o stay off or to return to previous state.

Those are just my insights

that's for waking from the sleep state. Which actually begs the question-

is she shutting down the computer all the way or putting it to sleep?Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 31, 2008, 04:38:45 AM

Sorry, my machine will boot by moving the mouse even if it is "shutdown", that's why I have it disabled because the slightest bump on my desk...whirr goes the FANS lol.

I just use my spacebar for my powerup.

Note that for this to work I had to set a jumper on my mobo to +5VSB or something like that.Quote from: Kurtiskain on December 31, 2008, 04:53:32 AM

+5V Standby circuit.

Am I the only person that literally DISCONNECTS the computer from the wall (I shut the surge protector off)? when I'm not using it?

you really work with some strange hardware kurtiskain... motherboards that support both internal and add-on Video cards, computers that turn on with keyboard/mouse activity from power-off state Thanks for the insight... I will post back my findings.

Thanks !!Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 31, 2008, 06:12:42 AM

Haha yeah I guess I do.

I used to work alot with old Socket 7 boards because older seemed to just give and give and give, now you replace stuff here and there every 2 DAYS it seems.

anyways yes I do switch it off at the wall, but only at night time.

ASUS P4Pe Mobo - lets me turn on from POS - built in I guess, most motherboards let you do this I'm certain, I even came across a slot-1 Mobo that allowed you to type in a 4 letter "password" to allow the computer to power up.

but hey I am in NZ, maybe we get all the weird equipment?? :S lol

anyways goodluck Durkis

I switch off at the wall every time I power down. This also takes out peripherals such as modem etc. I got into the habit after one day coming home and find my pc had powered up all by itself. I had a dust cover on at the time so very luck not to start a fire. Good for the environment to turn everything off. One cause of this occurrence is that you cloned your OS from another pc instead of doing an install from scratch. What happens is the Power Management settings in the cloned OS do not match the hardware. Mine hasn't done it since I did a fresh install but I'm not going to take a chance.
