Solve : computer upgrade.?

Answer»

i currently have a dual BOOT system on my machine with two hard drives, windows 98 se on one and windows xp pro on the other. the machine is seven years old and slow.. i am considering uninstalling the xp version and reformatting that drive and then removing the current motherboard and processor and replacing both with something more modern and faster. i appreciate that will require modern memory and probably a new power supply. I have a graphics card in the machine, can i install this on e new mainboard and will the new machine boot from the existing 98 drive. also can anyone advise me on likely snags. i intend to install a new copy of xp on the second drive when the machine runs. THX in anticipation. walter. What type of graphics card? AGP? PCI? If AGP, will the new motherboad have an AGP slot? If not, then you won't be able to use your old AGP card.

As far as booting up from your existing Win 98SE hard drive, with a new motherboard, it might work, but you should expect a turbulent ride. The new motherboard will require different DRIVERS for audio, VGA, LAN, USB, etc., etc., that are not installed on your old drive, and the old drive will have drivers for the old motherboard. So, if you try this, you should expect to see Win 98SE repeatedly going through the Found New Hardware wizard until you get all the appropriate drivers installed. You may able to work through it and get Win 98SE to the point of being reasonably contented. So, try it if you want to, but be prepared to encounter some road bumps, and perhaps having to decide it's not going to work.

Actually, with the upgrades you have planned, you're going to be close to having a whole new system. Have you thought about buying another case and just assembling another computer, and maybe keeping the old one with Win98SE on it? You can network them; would be chance to LEARN some networking.hey actually be rly careful with the win98 thing. i did it and all of a sudden my cd rom drive dissapeared, and a bunch of drivers had fallen to pieces. other problems with differnt kkinds of drive will occur. To my xprience, ovrall, win98 will react badly to new hardware and you will have a lot of trouble with various things.
so i reccomend putting win xp on if you get a faster computer going. other than that, try linux. As mentioned a lot of newer hardware just doesn't have drivers for Windows 98 anymore. 98SE is great for OLDER hardware, but when you upgrade that, you may need to upgrade the operating system as well. Keep in mind that MS is stopping active support for 98 next month. thx everyone who replied to my query about upgrading my computer. I will take note of everything said and will install xp home and uninstall 98 se,. walter.
