Solve : Computer Upgrades?

Answer»

Hi there,

My Computer is roughly 2 years old. I'm looking at some upgrades.

I have lots of questions.

1) Should a new motherboard have DDR3 RAM support (I'll have to buy all new RAM if that's the case)? Is there such thing as a motherboard that supports DDR2 and DDR3? (I have 3 GB of DDR2 RAM right now. Running XP and plan to stay on XP)

2) I found a motherboard that supports AM2, AM2+ and AM3 CPU socket. Would that be good; as in leave room for more upgrades? I have an AM2 processor at the moment.

3) Like I mentioned, processor. Would it be good to get a quad CORE?

4) If I were to get a faster processor (up from a 2.2 GHz dual core), would that SPEED up framerates on my video card? Or would it need to be new video card alltogether. Just got one, and not performing quite as well as I would have wished, and games are only going to get bigger.

I'm only 14 years old, so I don't have huge amounts of money (and I don't want to spend every penny in my bank account on this), but do you guys have any suggestions? I'm looking for a good upgrade; something that will last me a fairly good amount of time. What's your mainly usage with a computer?QUOTE from: tju2an on August 23, 2009, 02:03:34 PM

What's your mainly usage with a computer?

It would be a lot easier to help suggest upgrades if we know what you like to do, or would like to do on your computer.Sorry guys.

I use it for moderate gaming. Doesn't need to be top notch, but I want more than bare minimum.

I do script editing and THINGS like that, but that takes little upgrade anyway. What OS are you running?

How much RAM do you have installed? I'm running Windows XP with 3 Gb of DDR2 RAM.

My specs are in my profile as well.Okay, I'll try from a slightly different angle.

Is there ANYTHING that you want your computer to be able to do that it can't now do - or has problems doing?

I didn't notice the specs there. I usually don't look.It can do almost everything now.

Runs a few games slower than I would like.

I'm kind of looking to upgrade for newer games and newer technology.

I want to upgrade my Video Card, eventually, but it can wait a while.

My processor could get upgraded, but to upgrade, I need a new motherboard.
So my big questions would be related to the motherboard and processor.

Basically, I'd like to have a good Idea of what to look at when I'm ready to upgrade. What size of PSU is currently in your computer?585 W

Has two 12V rails. One at 19 Amps, one at 20.Everything looks good on your system. Why not just get a new video card for now. Then you can save your money for the larger upgrades down the road.Sure. Thanks.

I'll get a new video card and hopefully my game will speed up.Which game is it?
i think it seems fine for alot of games
one note is that processor wont be very fast for detailed 3dQuote from: smeezekitty on August 23, 2009, 05:46:46 PM
