Solve : Computer will not power hardware on Start?

Answer»

When the 3 YR. old VELOCITY desktop starts I hear 3 long beeps. Only the mouse is getting power. Screen is blank. The drives (2 Hitachi HDP7250 drives about 2 yrs old) go off (stop) when the beeps start. The comp. then self restarts, but no post or option menu on screen as this Velocity won't power any hardware, just power to the mouse. Have a Intel DX58SO MB. I put new Patriot Memory in the machine about 3 wks ago and have used it nearly every day with N/P. The hardware is protected by an APC back up. I've done a sorts of computer MB and UPGRADES / replacements on the families stuff, but this is a new one for all of us. Thanks ahead of time.Try isolating your RAM module by inserting one alternately on boot up. Make sure to ground first by touching CPU casing before touching internal components. OK, heres what shows: the Channel A DIMM 1 is bad, all other 3 DIMM slots are happy with a stick. Tried another couple types of sticks I have in my "stock" and they worked/didn't work as did the Patriot Sector 5 memory in the slots.
So, here are some questions for you jason:
So, what do you advise I do? Is it OK to run 3 sticks in the DIMM 0 slots? (LEAVING the DIMM 1 unfilled)
I originally went to a lot more memory that the stock machine had because some prog. were a little slow.
The box is arrayed with fans, and I monitor the HEAT...so it wasn't that.
I'll just run sticks in the good slots. Right?
It must be nearly impossible to repair a bad slot, correct?
I don't want to go with a new MB if I don't have to but if I must....oh well, got to play my game.
And BIG thanks for the easy to do advice!Quote from: Thomas Bailey on September 03, 2011, 09:17:40 AM

1. How do you know the DIMM slot is bad? All DIMM's failed in the same slot?
2. Yes.
3. Yes.
4. Correct. Slots don't go bad unless you have physically damaged it in some way.jason2074,
Got it.
Many thanks.
