Solve : Connecting to the internet?

Answer»

I've just BOUGHT a TOSHIBA laptop with a built in modem but don't seem to be able to connect by a USB cable to my existing Talktalk modem.

It say I've installed the drivers but the modem doesn't light up and shows no connection - not surprisingly.

The laptop is a Toshiba satellite L450-136 and has a LAN socket but nothing else other than USB ports.

Does this mean I can only connect by wi-fi or if not how do I use the on-board modem using a hard wired connection please?

Many thanks for any help anyone can offer.I don't understand....are you trying to connect your built in modem to a USB cable? And then to another modem?

Can you walk though your connections again? And is this laptop new? What is the model and what VERSION windows are you running?

1., 4. Your laptop does not have a built-in modem, unless it's for a dial-up connection.
2. LAN port connects to external modem or external router.
3. You can use wi-fi if you have wireless router or wireless modem
In the UK that model comes with THREE network interfaces.
Phone jack
Ethernet Jack
Wi Fi (Wireless 802.11)Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 29, 2009, 01:21:24 PM

Ethernet Jack
Wi Fi (Wireless 802.11)
Phone Jack is
Topology: international V.90 modem (V.92 ready)
Speed: 56 Kbps data and 14.4 Kbps fax

That's dialup any way you look at it.

If the OP is attempting to plug that into the "Talktalk modem", it's never going to work.Hi, folks and thanks for the responses.

I already have a PC on broadband and plug the talktalk modem into the PC with a USB connection and it works fine.

As I said before I've now bought a Toshiba laptop and was thinking I could plug in the talktalk modem using a USB connection just as I do now - having run the talktalk installation disk - but it doesn't seem to work. The modem for example which usually shows two green lights shows only one red light.

The laptop has a LAN and wireless LAN apparently which means nothing to me unfortunately!!

The computer uses Windows 7.

Any help gratefully accepted. TalkTalk modem has USB and ethernet ports. If it works anything like a cable modem, you can't use both ports SIMULTANEOUSLY.

If you want to use 2 computers on the modem, you need a router and you need to change the desktop PC to ethernet. If you get a wireless router, it has both wired ports and wireless "ports".Hi,

Thanks for the picture. The talktalk modem that I have is not the one you have shown mine only has a socket for the 'phone line from the filter and then a USB cable (which is fixed and cannot be removed from the modem).

I connect the USB cable to my PC and away it goes (after loading the talktalk disk of course) and it's worked for a years no problem.

The Toshiba manual shows the following :

External monitor port
LAN jack
HDMI port out
USB port x 3

So I can only physically connect the modem into the Toshiba with the USB cable apparently.
On the filter it reads ADSL modem printed on the filter itself where the cable from the filter exits to the modem. Do I need a different modem?

I don't want to run both computers simultaneously I just thought I could plug the modem in to whichever was being used at the time. Maybe that isn't possible?

Help gratefully accepted as the wife is getting a bit stroppy 'cause I bought the Tosh. for her! Quote from: notahopeinhell on October 30, 2009, 03:47:39 AM

1. It's a pretty old modem if it has no ethernet.
2. TalkTalk software may not be compatible with new computer.
3. Time for a new modem.
4. If it's not working, it's most likely the USB modem drivers are outdated.Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 30, 2009, 01:27:02 PM

Hi, mate

You may be right and if you are that at least would be less unpleasant than the words the wife has used to describe my computer prowess!!

Not that I have ever said I knew much about computers but that doesn't seem to wash.
