Solve : Converting laptop to use desktop monitor?

Answer»

Hi, Not sure if this should have gone in "Windows" forum, but here GOES...

I have an older Compaq Presario 12XL500 laptop with a burnt out LCD (backlight is shot). This model also has a VGA port, to which I've hooked up a large CRT monitor. I've figured out how to physically remove the now defunct LCD screen, but when I do, I notice a problem: With the LCD plugged in, the external CRT monitor looks fine with the 1024 x 768 resolution. HOWEVER, if I SHUT down the laptop, unplug the LCD screen, and re-boot, the 1024 x 768 resolution on the CRT is now huge--bigger than the screen. I can fix this by reducing resolution to 800 x 600, but the ICONS and text get huge, websites are too big, etc. etc. etc.

So. Does anyone know why it does this? Is there a way to get use my laptop sans LCD, but not have to reduce resolution? The CRT is a Mac if that helps...
