Answer» I am having a problem with my laptop connecting to the internet. I lose the connection after a few minutes and get time out messages. Then it will come back on for a few minutes and then the process repeats.
I tried going to the c PROMPT and reset Winsock (netsh Winsock reset) and no luck. The computer I am using now is connected wirelessly to the network so I THINK I can assume that the router is working since I am able to send this post. So here is the information about my computer:
GATEWAY CX200X laptop Windows XP SP2 Tablet Pentium M 1.73GHz 1394 Net Adapter Bluetooth LAN access server driver Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet Intel Pro Wireless 2200BG Network ConnectionThe laptop is connected via wireless as well?Does this connection probelm occur only when you have a wired connection to your router? If a wireless connection to the same router has no problems, then you can probably safefly rule out the internet connection being at fault.
Try this with your wired connection setup,
Open a command prompt and type
ping -t google.com
this will create a continuous ping which will show as 'timed out' at any point when a connection isn't present. Whilst this ping is running, try moving the network cable in it's socket on the laptop, on the router, and also just wiggle it around in general. If you see the ping timing out any particular point while you are doing this, then you have probably found your problem.
If that doesn't help, try the following when the connection is down,
Open the command prompt and type
ipconfig /release
then,
ipconfig /renew
then,
ipconfig /all
Post the results of the ipconfig /allSorry I didn't make this clear first. Yes, I am using a wireless connection. I am posting this from the laptop that is having problems demonstrating that it does work sometimes. It's just very unreliable.Check for a driver update for the wireless netcard. If one exist it should be available from the website of the laptop manufacturer. The new drivers seem to have fixed the problem. Thanks, Deerpark! The title of the TOPIC made me chuckle...i've got 4 or 5 of them lying around and your welcome to them...
Well, I lied. It's not fixed. I just had a LONG run of no problems. I'm now on another computer. *sigh* LOL Patio! (when I'm not swearing at my computer)
