Solve : CPU heat sink question?

Answer»

Does anyone think that I would have a problem if I upgraded an AMD Athlon X2 4200+ CPU to an AMD Athlon X2 6400+ without changing the heat sink and fan? (The 4200+ is running with STOCK cooler).

Thanks in advance.first of all would your motherboard support the new cpu?? are the voltages of the old and new cpu the same? when you buy a cpu, most of the cpu's that you buy already come with a fan... to be on the safe side i would REPLACE that cpu with the fan that comes for that type It's an ebay job so it doesn't come with the fan and heat sink. I could buy one with a heat sink but I'm trying to be cheap about this.

As for support see for yourself: http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/list.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=M2N4-sli&p=1To ANSWER my own question, no. The old processor is a 65 Watt the replacement 125 Watts... And I hear AMD don't give much head room with their coolers.Quote from: Accessless on May 25, 2011, 04:01:56 AM

Stock coolers are never very good. Good enough to get the job done to a point. You may be correct there Quaxo in regards to AMD...but in my EXPERIENCE since Quad cores were rolled out i have had zero issues with the iNtel stock coolers...
Built quite a few of them and only 1 had slightly out of range temps...turns out it was indeed a faulty factory unit that was below RPM rates specified.
