Solve : Creative Launches $40 MP3 Player? |
|
Answer» With the screenless and smooth-as-a-polished-rock ZEN Stone MP3 player, Creative is promoting the concept of a nearly-disposable, inexpensive MP3 player. Creative CEO Sim Wong Hoo said that you can loan out the ZEN Stone MP3 player "to a friend just like you would a CD or a mix tape and not have to worry about it." MP3 players dropped another notch in pricing on Thursday, when Creative introduced the Creative ZEN Stone and an accompanying speaker system, the TravelSound ZEN Stone. The player and the speaker system each retail for $39.99. Screenless and as smooth as a water-polished rock, the 1GB player will compete directly with the iPod Shuffle. Like that popular Apple mini-device, it comes in a variety of colors. For the Stone, the choices are black, white, red, blue, pink and green. It holds up to 250 songs encoded in MP3 format at 128kbps, or 500 WMA songs encoded at 64kbps, and the built-in, rechargeable battery lasts up to 10 hours on a single charge. 'A Whole New Way' Creative is promoting the concept of a nearly-disposable, inexpensive MP3 player. "Whether it's your only player or a second player to take with you anywhere," said Creative chairman and CEO Sim Wong Hoo in a statement, "the low price lets you think of MP3 players in a whole new way. You can loan it to a friend just like you would a CD or a mix tape and not have to worry about it, but you'll like it so much that you'll want another, so you always have one with you." And, if you decide it's so disposable you could try skipping it along a pond's surface, the size and weight are ideal. It weighs less than an ounce and measures half an inch thick, with overall dimensions of 2.1 x 1.4 x 0.5 inches. Creative is making every effort to encourage personalized styling for the ZEN Stone. It's offering such accessories as translucent skins with color-coordinated clips or armbands, and a keychain with a small case for the unit. The TravelSound ZEN Stone The ZEN Stone docking system, the TravelSound ZEN Stone, is available in either black or white and can run for up to 20 hours on two AAA alkaline batteries. A free software download, Creative Media Lite, is available for PCs running Windows Vista or Windows XP, with SP 1 or above. This tool enables the user to convert songs from CDs to MP3, to manage folders and to transfer files. In addition to MP3 and WMA, the ZEN Stone will also play WAV and Audible formats, and will work with USB 1.1 ports, although USB 2.0 is recommended. The ZEN Stone joins a growing line of other ZEN products from Creative, including the Vision W, Vision:M and V Plus video/audio players and the ZEN Micro MP3 player. The ZEN Stone goes on sale LATER this MONTH, and the TravelSound ZEN Stone will be available in July. Creative, which creates digital entertainment products for use with computers and the Internet, was founded in Singapore in 1981. Its best known products include the Sound Blaster audio cards for PCs and the NOMAD Jukebox digital audio players.
