Solve : Data recovery of flooded hard drive?

Answer»

I had two pcs in my basment mine and my wifes tell a pipe bust and flooded out my basment so now im left with two damp computer and thay will not boot now. I live out in the contry and there are not any computer shops arond so i was wondering if you all have any advis for fixing it.Have you already tried to boot them?

How did you attempt to dry them?

Were they plugged in when they flooded? The best approach to do this is long slow controlled drying...
Move them onto an elevated surface and remove the cases...
Individually remove all components and spread them out.
Use a lint free cloth and some rubbing alcohol on all contact points on each component.

Have a fan or two blowing constant air on them for 2 to 3 days.

Carefully re-assemble all components and replace both power supplies and i wish you luck.Quote from: patio on September 14, 2009, 11:12:15 AM

You don't. patio did not say DISASSEMBLE the hard drive; he said disassemble the computer. Quote from: soybean on September 14, 2009, 12:21:22 PM

Right. He needs to dry both the motherboard and the power supply.
If the water was very pur, there should be not problem.

Here is supplemental information:

This is the procedure to clean any electronic computer board that has become dirty because of water flooding.
Remove the circuit board from he box or fixture.
Spray both sides of the circuit board with a mixer of :
1/2 PINT water
1 pint rubbing alcohol 70 - 80 %
1/4 teaspoonful of illiquid detergent.
Shake off excess and dry completely.
Reapeat if dirts residue is still visible.

Use a hair dryer to speed up the process. All water must be removed.

IMPORTANT. A small trace of water gets into some components. When the power is turned on again the component will become permanently damaged. This is why you must place the circuit board in an AREA where there is heat, good ventilation and very low humidity for several hours. Ambient temperateness of 80 c will not damage electronic components while the power is off. High temperature is the most effective WAY to drive out trapped moisture.

EDIT: EITHER buy a new hard drive or send it in to a professional to recover the data. Trying to recover a water damaged hard drive is very hard to do.
