Answer» hi everyone,
first time so please pity the fool!!! my problem is this i have been given an old hard drive 20G with xp pro installed. i don't have the cd and the original machine is LONG gone. on the hard drive are files that i need. i don't need the os files just My Documents folder. i have installed the old HD in a new computer as a slave. i am running xp pro on the new system. i can see the drive and some of the os folders but i can't access the My Documents folder (the one i need) also the old system had a password (i know it) but i STILL can't get anywhere. all i want is the My Documents folder can it be done?
THANKS chrisWhat do you mean by "but i can't get anywhere"?
Do you mean you do not see the My Documents folder on the slave drive or you receive an Access Denied error when you try to open the My Documents folder? or you just don't know where the My Documents folder is located on the slave drive?Try Thishey,
thanks "patio" i'll give that a try tonight hopefully. and to "pcdoc4christ" i get the access denied but what is FUNNY also in the properties of the disk it has 8G used but when i hover over the My Documents icon i get empty folder message for which i know is BS.
thanks guys chris
i'll post back with an update thanks againQuote ...i get the access denied but what is funny also in the properties of the disk it has 8G used but when i hover over the My Documents icon i get empty folder message for which i know is BS. ... I was afraid of that. If you were using Windows XP Home you chose the option to make your files PRIVATE, which means you will no longer be able to access them. If you were using Windows XP Professional, you chose the option to encrypt your My Documents folder.
Without the original motherboard, there is little you can do. It's a security feature in Windows to prevent people who steal your computer from getting to your files. You might try buying a used motherboard of exactly the same make and model from eBay or some place and see if you can get to Windows when you connect the hard drive to that motherboard.
