Answer» What is the DIFFERENCE in the two types of RAM? What are the pros and cons of each? Is it worth a little extra money to get DDR3?Welcome to the CH forums.
DDR2 vs DDR3 - latency vs bandwidth. DDR3 is the upgrade. Googled for DDR2 VS DDR3 and this popped up.
Good READING...
You also should check if your MBoard supports DDR3 or you may just be wasting extra money. I believe the front side bus speed should be 800 or even 1066 to see a difference...Now if I were using an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600 and the FSB is 1066MHz then using any memory higher than 1066 would be a waste, correct? Using any RAM that is higher than 1066MHz such as 1333MHz would not be utilized to its fullest? So it would be logical to use a higher end DDR2 1066MHZ with low latency than going for DDR3?
I am new to purchasing high end memory so does anyone have SUGGESTIONS for fast memory (2GB to 4GB)? What makers do you prefer and which perform best? I've been looking at Newegg.com so am probably purchasing from there.
Thanks for the read Hedonist.personally, i would not get DDR3 yet, the latencies need to come down a BIT, along with that huge price tag.

i would go for DDR2800 or DDR21066. the cheaper way to go is the 800 because there is QUITE a difference in price between 800 and 1066. the 1066, however, will give you a bit more headroom if you wish to overclock.

ive always been a fan of OCZ RAM. apparently their RAM overclocks fairly well.
