I'm new to this forum and would like some advice on Sound. I have a Dell Optiplex 400 which has a it's own sound from the motherboard. Has no sound card but recently my computer was invaded by a VIRUS which apparently wiped out the $winnt$.inf file. Since after i cleaned up the virus the default speaker icon which usually APPEARS by the time status isn't there. As i believe it a legacy type DEVICE and would have to PROGRAM it if order for it to work. I READ that somewhere on the internet.
But anyways what i would like to know is if i purchase a sound card place it in the open slots where the modem is if i would get the computer to show the default speaker icon at the bottom of the screen where the time is?

Are you running Windows XP or Vista?I'm using windows 2000 pro
