Solve : Different RAM Not Working Together?

Answer»

Windows XP Pro SP 3
MSI KT4 Ultra (MS-6590)
ATI Radeon 9600 XT
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy
WDC WD800JB-00CRA1
AMD Athlon XP 1350MHz (6.75 x 200) 1500+

RAM
OCZ OCZ4001024ELPE
Corsair VS512MB400
Corsair VS512MB400

If you need more hardware information just let me know.

I just upgraded, I think, from 756mb ram to 2gig. I have a problem though. When I started and sat at the desktop for about a minute or tried to do anything the computer would reboot and or crash whatever I was running. Each piece of ram works without error by themselves but when I put all 3 in, in any order on the mobo, it would crash.
The two Corsair are 512mb PC3200 400MHz and the single OCZ is 1024mb PC3200 400MHz Dual Channel. I don't really know what dual channel does but I'm assuming that's the problem since besides that they're identical.
I went in to my BIOS and set the SDRAM Timing Frequency, I think that's what it's called, to 200MHz. Anything higher and it would crash. I don't know if I'm doing this right or not. I'm not so good with hardware issues. 2gig at 200MHz seems slower than my 768mb at 333MHz(i think).

Can anyone help me get it going at 400MHz? Thanks.Your BOARD accepts DDR 200/266/333 DDR up to 3 gigQuote from: ubermonkey on July 21, 2008, 11:15:31 AM

Dual channel has nothing to do with it. The RAM is not compatible EDIT: with each other. This is very common when mixing memory modules. The same specs do not guarantee compatibility.

Suggest that: you return the newly purchased RAM, and, if you want 2 GB, PURCHASE 'matched RAM' for dual channel - this will be 4 x 512 MB modules, or 2 x 1 GB modules, check your MB MANUAL. If you want 1 GB, use the 2 x Corsair or the OCZ, whichever you didn't return - just be sure that you install the RAM into the correct slots per the MB manual.

Best of luck!

EDIT: The MB spec that I looked at suggested that the board will only run PC3200 (400) SPEEDS for MSI CERTIFIED memory. May be an issue for you trying to run at 400 mhz. However, the difference between running at 366 v 400 is insignificant.
