Solve : Disk Drive not reading disks?

Answer»

My computer has stopped reading disks all together. I cant install programs or anything. Ive tried going to the drive itself and manually opening the program but its not even there because the disk drive doesnt even spin and read the disk. help?Exactly what happens when you try to start the computer? What do you see on screen? How far does it get?

Have noticed any unusual noises from the drive before this happened? How old is it?

What make and model computer is this? Tell us the specs on it.

Everything else on the computer is fine. Dont know all the specs for it since its new to me and I bought it from a friend. But the computer itself is not even a year old I believe. Its an HP Desktop. Thats all I know at the moment since its at my other house (parents divorced). The only irregular thing is the disk drive doesnt make that normal sound of it spinning on startup you know? Check the CABLING to the drive...there will be 2 connectors, a WIDE flat ribbon connecter and a 4 pin power connecter. Make sure they are both SNUGLY connected.
The only way to determine if the drive has failed is to swap it into a known working machine...if it STILL doesn't run replace it.
This is simple enough for you to do yourself. Just take your time and make sure the power is removed and take anti static precautions.
