Solve : Do you believe in "karma"??

Answer»

Just a random question - does anyone here believe in karma or anything similar?
Doesn't have to be religious or anything, just the whole "do something good, good things happen to you" type of thing.
Along the same lines, what about atonement?  As in, do something bad, then do good things to make up for it, do you believe that works?
Fairly random musings here I know, but that's what Off Topic is for.
Pleas bear in mind the new rule (clicky) and don't flame anyone, I'm not looking to start a debate even remotely about religion here.

Don't ask why this popped into my head all of a sudden.
5p says someone asks exactly that because of the above line.I know you don't mean it in a religious manner but i think this does contravene the new forum rule. I can see it causing religious type arguments.

FBI believe in it.

I believe its happened to my friend.I don't believe in it, yet I still do.I am religious so, I believe in karma more than an atheist would.

Karma is for real.

As you SOW so shall you reap Meaning:Your deeds, good or bad, will repay you in kind.

Origin

From the Bible, Galatians VI (King James Version):

Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Good topic Calum.....
I believe in it.It's impossible to state my personal views on this issue without discussing religion. Quote from: street1 on October 17, 2008, 04:15:10 PM

I agree, but I don't believe that its meant for this life,I believe what we sow here we will reap in our eternal life with Him.
In this life a lot of bad things happen to good people.
So If Calum meant that 'do good to others and they will do good to you' I don't believe that, I don't need to step outside the forums to state examples of this.

I think this is similar to 'repentance' and I believe in repentance, but repentance should not be doing wrong things deliberately thinking later I'll repent , that's not real repentance. The concept of "karma" is interesting, and there are many ways to interpret it.  Karma is tied in with intention, and "cause and effect."  I don't know if karma is set as a universal law, but yes, many believe that good deeds in this life will have effects / rewards in this life.  Others believe that karma can carry over from life cycle to life cycle.  The good deed or bad deeds done in this life affect our next life / state of existence.

A PART of reincarnation may be in learning lessons of past lives or living a "karmic" destiny of good or bad deeds done in the past.  Part of karma is in finding our destinies, according to our natures.  When we "align" ourselves with the universe, things go better than when we fight against ourselves.  (This is not so much meant in terms of choosing right from wrong, but meant in terms of being truly who we are -- being authentic, our true selves -- not necessarily what others think we should be.)

Some feel the universe as we know it is nothing but a "game" we have all chosen to play at this level -- and once we've learned the lessons we need to learn at this level, we move on to a more spiritual level.

This is part of why Buddhism, as a philosophy, recognizes the POTENTIAL for the saint to BECOME sinner, and the sinner to become saint.

Some state that eternal life is life without end, but for others, it is the timelessness of this present moment which makes life "eternal."

Atonement is famously broken into "at - one - ment" -- becoming one with God or the universe.  Can a person atone for one's past?  Certainly -- but we are back to intention, and what they truly want to do, what they truly want to become.  People may even fail in their attempts at atonement, but I think it is more important that they try with a proper attitude.

No need to ask why you thought of all this all of a sudden.  These questions, and others, are the underpinnings of myth, religion, and philosophy from many ages and all the world over.  We want to understand our place in the world and in the universe.Just so you guys know, I'm not at all a believer in any religion I know of.
Good to see your views on this topic though everyone.
Ivy: What I meant by "karma" isn't necessarily that you're nice to someone and they're then nice to you, but really what goes around comes around, if you're nice to someone then in some way you are rewarded, possibly by someone else benign nice to you or even finding some money.Everything you do in Life comes back to you one way or another....

Actually i no longer believe...this morning Calum's Karma ran over my Dogma. Quote

I see.....now I know why so many good things happen to me all the time....cause I do so many good things to others!! It goes like, I'm good to someone, he/she is not good but then someone else is superduper good......I like Karma  Quote from: Calum on October 16, 2008, 01:38:40 PM

I find it an ATTRACTIVE idea, have done for years, but I don't know if I "believe" in it, any more than I believe in horoscopes or God's judgement.
I agree that karma is an attractive idea.
I think I'm undecided but I'm not sure (now there's a cliché for you) - in the same way as I am undecided about ghosts etc despite having witnessed some odd activities myself.
Interesting range of opinions here.
