Solve : Drives keep failing - first floppy, now DVD (won't read or eject!)?

Answer»

Two weeks ago or so, the floppy drive failed. It was continually seeking, making a seek NOISE, etc., and not recognizing a floppy disk when inserted (I know, I had to dig one up and dust it off because who uses them anymore anyway, right?).

SO... I figured, "who needs a floppy drive anyway?" And I had my son disconnect the power to the floppy drive. End of seeking problem - in a brute-force kind of way.

The DVD drive was working well at that point.

Anyway, my husband stuck in his new Casino Royale DVD the other day and told me it wouldn't read, and that it was "stuck". TURNS out the drawer isn't STUCK - you can pull it out no problem with your fingernails, but the system doesn't recognize the DVD at all. Seems exactly like the same problem as with the floppy drive - except we NEED the dvd drive.

The drive doesn't recognize ANY dvd's now. When I select Eject from My Computer, the light does not flash. When I press the eject button on the DVD drive, it flashes a number of times rapidly, but does not eject.

HELP!!! (please - and thank you)Sounds like he might have also unplugged the DVD drive or something- obviously the Drive isn't getting power- Does the light go on at ANY TIME? (boot up?). Double-check that the Power cable is plugged into the DVD drive.

The other only possibility is that the drive is fried, unlikely though, unless you tried to do a firmware upgrade...

If possible see if the DVD drive works in a separate computer. Thanks for your reply!

The light does flash, so not unplugged. Very hard to test in another computer, but not impossible. I guess I just don't need the aggravation (4 kids including a baby RUNNING around at the moment - ok, the baby is not running around, but you get the picture!) if anything ELSE is possible to test it...

Any other ideas given that it definitely has power???

When the drive is open, the button works to "suck" in the CD but not to eject.
