Answer» Hello all.
I have a Dell XPS Gen II system with a SAMSUNG DVD-ROM in bay 1 and a brand new Samsung DVD-R/RW in bay 2. I have just physically installed the new DVD-R/RW drive and when I went to install the hardware, I went to My Computer to open my DVD-ROM, which had the install disk in it, and the drive vanished before my eyes. (Both DRIVES still have power however) Now neither bay 1 or 2 are recognized in My Computer rendering them useless other than the world's most expensive cup holders.
I've had this problem before a long time ago and I can't remember how I fixed it. Check off what you did?

Double check BIOS , make sure all cables are intact , remove the drives completely along with all attachments ... and RECONNECT it all .... go BACK into bios ... and check ... could be a loose cable ....don't worry,it's just the jumper setting behing the drive, try finding the right combination. This should work !
Make sure the drive's jumpers are set to either master or slave. If you already have a cd-rom on a cable its probably a master thus you would set the dvd-rom to a slave drive. Same goes if your putting it on a cable with a hard drive.
A new drive should also include a set of instruction more detailed then this and will show you visualy how to install and connect the cables. Let me know how you get on.
