Solve : dst short test fail - 2000-0146?

Answer»

yesterday my computer basically froze after being on all night. i could move the mouse, but no programs would run or open. task manager also would not open. i restarted the computer and the same thing happened. on the next restart i hit F12 and went into the diagnostic tests. the following tests failed:

DST short test: fail, error 2000-0146

during the second part of the diag these are the errors i received:

You're the second one in a week with the same computer with hard drive issues!  DST is Western Digital or Seagate?  Download the appropriate FREE diagnostic software, create the CD, then boot from it and run the tests.it's a seagate, which is a little odd because all  of the recommended compatible drives on dell's website for my computer are WD.

where do i go to download the diagnostic software?

btw, that sign in your signature is really stalkerish!!SeaTools... Quote from: patio on November 24, 2009, 07:12:30 AM
SeaTools...

to make a cd to boot from, can i just burn the .exe file to a cd?

which one am i SUPPOSED to download? i downloaded seatools for windows and i've got it running now on my computer..very very slowly, but running. the SMART test passed, the long DST testand the short DST test failed.

would the tests run better/faster by booting from a cd?That's the recommended method of running them...whether it'll be faster or not i won't speculate... Quote from: patio on November 24, 2009, 10:43:01 AM

could you please point me to where they are on the site and which file to use? It says SeaTools right in the middle.  Clik on it.
Seatools

It says Download SeaTools for DOS now! Clik on it.
Seatools for DOSThis is a waste of time...the drive is dead/dying. Quote from: patio on November 24, 2009, 05:45:39 PM

i already ordered a replacement drive from dell. should ARRIVE tomorrow. Keep in mind Seagate drives carry a 5 year warranty...you may be in luck.
