The drives themselves are pretty LARGE and as a result they need to be removed to allow laptops to be smaller/thinner/lighter. I never feel the need for optical drives in a laptop nowadays (Haven't had a laptop with one for over a year and never missed it) but you can always get an external one to connect over USB if you ever need one.
