Solve : DVD + CD Drives Disappeared?

Answer»

I just upgraded my video card to a new Nvidia 6200 AGP card and when I rebooted, Windows XP made me reactivate my copy (first time I've had to do that). Everything was fine until I noticed that my DVD and CD drives are now gone -- they do not SHOW up in Windows Explorer, nor in Device Manager ANYWHERE (there wasn't even any yellow warning icon next to it -- it's just totally gone from DM). However, I can still open and close the actual drives, so power is coming to them, but for whatever reason, they no longer exist according to Windows or that Windows can't detect them.

I've tried the technique described in http://www.theeldergeek.com/restore_missing_cd_or_dvd_drive.htm but that didn't work. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.Just to make sure, but you did check to see if any cables were knocked loose going to them? Make sure all connections are in securely. And some details about the actual machine would be HELPFUL as well.I have checked and as far as I can tell, all the cables are in place. I've even tried unplugging and plugging back in the cables in the hope that Windows will recognize it as new hardware, but that hasn't worked either.

The machine is about 4 years old, made by Atlas Micro (now defunct), with an MSI 745 motherboard, AMD K6 +2000 processor and 1GB of PC2700 RAM.Are the drives seen correctly in the BIOS? If they are not seen there, then Windows cannot solve the problem.Quote

I'm THINKING that the answer is no because when I go into the BIOS, there is seems to be an option to set the secondary master and slave settings (which I presume my DVD and CD drives are/were on) to CD, but the BIOS won't actually let me select it.

Would reformatting my computer and installing WinXP again help, or does the problem go beyond that?As GX1 Man alluded to if the BIOS is not recognising the drives Windows is NOT the problem...re-check your cabling. If the drives open and close then it's not the power leads so i would check the ribbon cables.

patio. 8-)Actually I MORE than alluded to it. Fixed it -- turns out that even though I thought the ribbon cable was securely fastened to the motherboard, I gave it one last hard shove, turned it on, and now it works. Thanks for your help.Glad you are all fixed up and thanks for posting back. Quote
