Answer» DVD/CDrom tray opens and closes however it no longer recognizes any DVDS, CD, etc... I tried resetting the BIOS, I've tried removing it and restarting... it stopped working after I rebooted it (hadn't rebooted in a few days). Before the reboot I updated iTunes and installed an game from 1996. I've tried System Restore. I cannot remove the game because to uninstall it prompts me to insert the games cd in the computer when of course doesn't recognize it. Help me guys
Number 2 - my CD-R is completely not working and hasn't for a while now. It doesn't show up on the "My Computer" screen or in the device MANAGER. It did reappear once drive and all and worked for a short while then it all disappeared again and has worked since.
Is there any hope left in the universe for me ? I beg of you oh woooo is me.Hey Bill, we are going to need more information to help* Operating System, what virus pro are you using, have you messed in the bios prior to this happening? Did you move the puter from one area to another b4 this? Did you uninstall anything just before it went poop ? It sounds like a driver issue... Please post as much info on your computer specs you can and it will make it much easier to try and help you.... Thanks!
Windows XP, I have an old virus protect on there from 2000 (Macafee) I did run my old Macafee virus protection and it found two virus' that I deleted. the virus was called W95/Coke.22231, haven't moved it no, didn't remove anything else that I can think of...
Computer is a Sony Vaio PC with a DVD/CDrom and a CD-R that originally had Window ME and I updated it to XP sometime ago but at least one of my cdroms (dvd/cdrom) worked then.
I reset the BIO per a sony reps suggestion but that didn't do anything... I followed other steps to fix the problem that were SUGGESTED like removing the upperfilter and lower filter however when I got to where those filters were suppose to be that were missing - I do not know if they were deleted, moved or were never there in the first place.
thanksok, why don't you 1st. go into " my computer " right click on the dvd/cd drive --- in mine its (E:) go down and click on properties click on "hardware" on top what does it say the drives current status is ?
if not working click - troubleshoot
Welcome to CH billy.
One post per issue is sufficient. More threads do not always produce more suggestions. It says that the device is working normally.
I have looked at things more and it seems to look like the problem may lie in that my upperfilter and lowerfilter in the registry is missing. Is there a fix for that? Is it possible to install replacement filters?Be very careful..............
http://www.randomfix.com/2007/04/12/windows-vista-%E2%80%93-missing-cddvd-rom-drive/First of all, you need decent anti-virus protection. Outdated McAfee isn't gonna cut it. You should install AVG Free, update it, and scan in Safe Mode.
Also, make sure everything's connected properly. If all else fails, you can replace the drive for about $40 including shipping. Okay...
The cables are all connected, virus protection is up to date and it's virus free. I went to the link and did what it said to the filters in the registry - when I got to the filters the only one I had was an UpperFilter which I removed like it said then I restarted my computer and I'm not getting anything. The DVD/CDrom opens and closes abut stilll does not read DVD/CD's.
FYI - I have a CD-R also which won't open at all. I cannot find the drive list in "My Computer" screen and it doesn't appear in the device manager - it's like it disappeared.... it's STAR WARS The Phantom CD-R Drive"
Okay I have an antivirus software installed - I've ran it and everything appears to be okay.
It seems to lie in the registry. There have been changes to it and it's affecting my DVDrom drive. Causing it to not read or recognize DVDs or CDs.
Is there anyway to restore my registry to proper working order?
Thank You.Right click both drives under Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and select remove...ignore the warning and re-boot Does this help ? ?
p.s. How old are these drives ? ? They both came with the computer. But the upper and lower filters are missing in the registry. I feel like this is the problem.
Will correcting that possibly make my drives work again? and how would I go about getting those filters back into the registry?
thank you Also... my second CDR drive is completely missing from the device manager and has been for a while now - nobody seems to know how to get it to show up on my computer. I've tried everykind of trouble-shooting but still the drive is missing the device manager and when I open "My Computer". The first drive (DVDrom) appears in the device manager and "My Computer" windows but even when I DELETE them and restart it doesn't fix that drive.
The only definitive way to test those drives would be to install them in a known working machine to determine if they are faulty or not... Brand new DVD burners are available @ NEWEGG for about 40 bucks.
