Solve : DVD drive no longer recognises DVDs but still reads CDs?

Answer»

Hi,

My sisters dvd drive has stopped recognising DVDs. In the past she has had no problem with it and it still reads and plays CDs.

The drive is a HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B

I have installed PowerDVD but that hasnt helped. If i INSERT a DVD and go into "my computer" and click on the disk drive there is just nothing recognised.

she is running Windows XP.

Could this be a driver error or is it not likely with it having worked in the past.

Any help much appreciated

Thanks

GazMost combo CD/DVD players use 2 lasers, one for CD and one for DVD.
If you can not read a DVD in DOS or Windows then it sounds like a hardware problem.
Laser MAY be dirty, out of alignment/focus or stuffed.
If you can get hold of a laser cleaning DISC it would be WORTH giving it a run

you could also try a FIRMWARE update for that brand  drive.
