Solve : dvd player won't work?

Answer»

I get a insert disc message when there is a disc in the drive.I have ran all the windows trouble shoot on that drive ,even reinstalled it .Still it won't work.More information needed - what is your OS? Make/model of computer and DVD drive? Past problems? Anything you did before this started happening?I think you're starting to get it, Calum! Quote

I think you're starting to get it, Calum!
Lol
Thanks
It's just common sense Dell dimension 2400 ,windows xp ,bought in 04.Have not used it in a long time .Quistion what detects that a disc is in tray?Could it need cleaned? And if so how do you clean it?The lens may need cleaning, but I'm not sure how to do that
It may require opening up the DVD drive itself, and will probably require opening the computer
Someone else may know whether this is a lens issue and how to fix it, so sit tight
In the meantime, keep working on it
Does this happen with all discs? Can the drive be used at all? Does Device Manager show a problem with the drive? Is there a newer driver available?
If I think of anything else I'll let you knowThere are commerical lens cleaner kits available. Some compressed air may work as well. You may want to open the machine and blow ALL of the dust out. While inside, check to see that the FLAT ribbon cable is firmly inserted.

What error message exactly? Is the drive seen in the BIOS settings? (F2 when you see the Dell LOGO.)

Sometimes drives just fail. So keep that as a possibility. What exactly did you do to troubleshoot?

I used what ever trouble shoot windows provide and it SAID device was working properly. No error message just say insert disc even when one is inserted. Can you read the contents of the disc in Explorer? Can you check properties on it? Try several different disc - Audio, Data, etc.Yes I can check properties on it. I have tried cd's dvd's, ALWAYS get the same message[ insert disc now ]even when one is inserted. It does not seem to detect that there is a disc inserted. The optics usually go LONG before the mechanical PORTION. That is, the drive will open and close, but it will not be able to read.

How old is that drive and has it had a lot of use? As a DVD burner is about $30 it would be relatively inexpensive to replace. I don't suppose it is still under warranty?

Not a burner ,not used much ,3 years old. Will not detect a disc in the tray.I would just replace it, based on the history you gave IF you did allof the things suggested. A lens cleaning kit is about 17 Bucks...add 13 to that and grab a DVD burner.

You would be finished quicker than this thread has been.
