Sometimes drives just fail. So keep that as a possibility. What exactly did you do to troubleshoot? I used what ever trouble shoot windows provide and it SAID device was working properly.No error message just say insert disc even when one is inserted.Can you read the contents of the disc in Explorer? Can you check properties on it? Try several different disc - Audio, Data, etc.Yes I can check properties on it. I have tried cd's dvd's, ALWAYS get the same message[ insert disc now ]even when one is inserted.It does not seem to detect that there is a disc inserted.The optics usually go LONG before the mechanical PORTION. That is, the drive will open and close, but it will not be able to read. How old is that drive and has it had a lot of use? As a DVD burner is about $30 it would be relatively inexpensive to replace. I don't suppose it is still under warranty? Not a burner ,not used much ,3 years old.Will not detect a disc in the tray.I would just replace it, based on the history you gave IF you did allof the things suggested. A lens cleaning kit is about 17 Bucks...add 13 to that and grab a DVD burner. You would be finished quicker than this thread has been.
