Solve : em and align?

I'm new to HTML. I can't get emphasized text to align, and it's really annoying me. I tried:

Code: [Select]&LT;em style="text-align: center;">blah blah</em>
It WORKS when I replace "em" with "p."

Any suggestions would be greatly APPRECIATED. Place the text in a div instead.
