Solve : Error starting OS?

Answer»

This is an odd error that I have never seen! I cloned my old 20gig IDE WD to a WD 160gig SATA and I get this error:

error starting os

I have tried REINSTALLING XP on it and then it pops up with a BAD dll file, the XP cd is not bad i have just finished using it on my kids computer with no probs, and to make things simple I removed all IDE CABLES from the mobo. I have never messed with SATA am I missing something?OLDER versions of Win XP had problems booting from an SATA drive make sure you do a clean install not a repair or quick format do a normal format and be sure you install the SATA drivers and any RAID controller drivers firstXP also has problems with such large drives in many cases. Partition it to something sensible.Quote

Do I need to setup a "raid setup" or will it work just as a drive. Im starting to doubt that a SATA can boot, I CANT find any docs on it!Of course SATA is bootable! Otherwise, the majority of newer machines would be useless.

To install XP a large SATA drive, you'll need at least SP1 slipstreamed, a functional floppy drive and a diskette that contains your SATA controller drivers.
If no floppy drive is available, then the drivers have to be SIF'd into the XP CD.

Mark my earlier comments re partitioning.
