Solve : External CDROM drive?

i have a windows 2000 machine with an external cdrom drive - which is shared out.  the drive is RANDOMLY DISAPPEARING.  I have to reboot machine, to GET it to reappear.  Anyone FAMILIAR with this?Is external CDROM PARALLEL port or USB port?
