Solve : External Hard drive.?

Recently my computer's internal hard drive BLEW, I took my NEW external (never used YET) and Hooked it up but my computer wont recognize it as the PRIMARY hard drive. I tried totally taking out the useless one and the same thing happens. Is it possible to use the external as the MAIN hard drive? Do I need to buy a new internal? Thanks..Is this a USB drive?
